Real estate companies tend to take on their founder's name and hang onto it—whether the namesake is still around, or has since left or died.
Consider that in Indianapolis, Simon Property Group, Kite Realty Group and Lauth Property Group are all named for founders who remain at the helm. Duke Realty Group still is named for Phil Duke, who died in 1986.
So the expectation was that The Linder Co. wouldn't toy with its well-known name, after founder Gary Linder sold his interest two years ago and stopped working at the company.
But Linder's four principals have decided a rechristening is in order as they put their own stamp on one of the top retail brokerage firms in the Indianapolis area.
As of today, The Linder Co. starts answering its phone as the Sitehawk Retail Real Estate Group, a corporate moniker that had the principals enthusing over its catchy relevance as they sat around their conference table last week.
"It reflects strength and focus," offered Mark Perlstein, who became Gary Linder's first partner in the mid-1980s.
"We think it'll drum up some immediate interest," chimed in Scott M. Gray, who sees in the logo "a hawk flying over the landscape."
Changing a well-recognized company name can be a gamble. Linder well knows the value of corporate names, since it's brokered land and lease deals across Indiana for a who's who of famous American retailers, from Blockbuster and Olive Garden to Old Navy and Starbucks.
"We think it's a risk worth taking," Gray said of the name change. "We're confident we won't miss a beat. We've analyzed it very closely."This article appeared in the March 19th, 2007 edition of the Indianapolis Star. Click the above link to download the entire article in the original format.
